When the stress of life get too much and you need a quick escape from reality, The Hideout Cafe offers the recovery. The Charlotte Street eatery also offers amazing locally roasted coffee, great tea, and awesome cake. Leithers are spoilt for choice when it comes to charming cafes, but The Hideout holds a special place in the hearts of many locals. It’s not that there’s anything revolutionary about what the cafe is doing; rather it’s that the simple things The Hideout does, it does better than most. Is it the Teapigs tea that makes a cuppa taste so sublime here? Perhaps, though it could owe as much to the presentation, the friendly service and the soothing ambiance of the cafe itself. Whatever the case, it works like a charm. When the weather turns blustery, there’s no cosier place to be. Inside the characterful cafe, circular wooden tables and chairs are spread out across the wooden floor, while framed photos and the occasional lampshade give the eatery an aura more akin to that of a favourite relative’s living room. In addition to tea, the dog-friendly cafe serves obadiah coffee that goes down easy and warms the soul before imparting a welcome caffeine kick to the brain. Open till 5pm through the week and on weekends, The Hideout does a roaring trade in fresh sandwiches, homemade soup and moist, crumbly cakes. Beside a counter groaning under the weight of flaky pastries and decadent tray bakes, a gleaming espresso machine and large chalkboard displaying the day’s specials can be found. Take as long as you like over ordering; inside The Hideout, time moves at its own unhurried pace.
